The ALONGI Italian Market in Flower Mound
The Lawrence Brothers grew up eating the best Italian dishes prepared by their mother Josephine Alongi Lawrence and their Nana, Lena Alongi. Italian food has been running through their veins since they were old enough to say more bread and succu please! As in most Italian influenced families every family gathering involved food…pasta, pasta and more pasta. Mangiare, Mangiare.. their Nana would say offering fresh Italian bread, cookies and pasta with meatballs or sausage prepared with a delicious red sauce (succu, our Nana would call it.) Her sauce would taste better and better at each occassion. Our mom and Nana kept no written recipes, it was always done freestyle,by feel and taste. A touch of this and a touch of that and before you could say “Devo guardare più pesante per voi? ” (Do I look heavier to you?)…the sauce was ready and better than ever.
Geoff and Richard (Rick) grew up in Kansas City and every so often they would get to go on the periodic trip downtown to one of the best Italian Markets ever built…Roma Bakery. At Roma Bakery, their Mama would buy her breads, olive oils, pastas, sauces and a cannoli or two for the kids. This was a true authentic Italian grocery store and it is still in business today.
In the late 80’s Rick relocated to Dallas after graduating with his MBA from Baylor never making it back to Kansas City. And a few years later Geoff, with wife Nancy, made their way to North Texas …. but their love for true Italian food never diminished. And soon thereafter Geoff’s twin brother, Jonathan and his wife Teri and son Michael migrated to Texas as well… soon to be followed by their parents Dick and Jo, with their Nana, Lena, not to far behind. And the family was back together again and so were the family gatherings with all the great pasta and succu you really just only needed some fresh bread to eat with!
Living in North Dallas has been a wonderful experience…Geoff Lawrence would say. But one of the things that he and his brother Rick missed most about Kansas City were the trips to Roma Bakery for authentic fresh Italian meats, cheeses and pastries including those delicious cannolis. Over the years they both talked about opening up their own Italian Market and Deli one day…since the North Dallas area really has no true option.
In April of 2010 their dreams became a reality with the opening of the ALONGI’S Italian Market and Deli located in the heart of Flower Mound. The Italian Market and Deli carries over 200 varieties of Italian wine, a large selection of Italian groceries and a deli for fresh meats, sandwiches, pastas and pastries including those mouth watering cannolis!
If you are looking for a true Italian Market and Deli experience than a visit to The ALONGI’S Italian Market in Flower Mound is a must. One of the best ways to experience what the market has to offer is to attend one of their regular wine tastings. Please RSVP by contacting Geoff, Rick at winetastings@italianmarketanddeli.com or direct at 972-355-3354 (DELI).
